Gud Masala Chai

Natural Sweetness, Timeless Flavor

Gud Masala Chai

Name - Gud Masala Chai

Sanskrit Name – गुडयुक्ता मसाला चाय

English Name – Jaggery Spiced Tea

History

In the heart of India, where age-old recipes have been handed down through the years, lies the origin of Gud Masala Chai, sometimes referred to as Jaggery Spiced Tea. A raw sugar derived from sugarcane or palm sap, jaggery is known as “gud” in Hindi. Due to its deep, earthy sweetness and several health advantages, it has been utilized in Indian cooking for millennia.

The concept of masala chai, a spiced tea, emerged during British colonial rule in India. The British popularized tea drinking, and Indians adapted the practice by adding local spices such as cardamom, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon, creating a unique blend that catered to Indian palates. Combining jaggery with these spices created Gud Masala Chai, a beverage that marries the sweetness of jaggery with the aromatic warmth of traditional Indian spices.

How to Prepare the Perfect Cup

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup milk (or your preferred non-dairy alternative)
  • 2 tablespoons jaggery (grated or crushed)
  • 2 teaspoons black tea leaves or 2 tea bags
  • 1-inch piece of ginger (grated)
  • 4-5 cardamom pods (crushed)
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 black peppercorns (optional)

Preparation Method

    • Boil the Water: In a saucepan, add 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil over medium heat.

    • Add Spices: Once the water starts boiling, add the grated ginger, crushed cardamom pods, cloves, cinnamon stick, and black peppercorns (if using).

Let the spices simmer in the boiling water for about 5 minutes to release their flavors.
    • Add Tea: Add the black tea leaves or tea bags to the boiling water and let it simmer for another 2-3 minutes.

    • Add Milk: Pour in 1 cup of milk and bring the mixture back to a boil. Be careful to keep an eye on it so it doesn’t boil over.

    • Sweeten with Jaggery: Add the grated or crushed jaggery to the tea and stir well until it dissolves completely. You can adjust the amount of jaggery to taste.

    • Simmer: Reduce the heat and let the tea simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing all the flavors to blend together.

    • Strain and Serve: Use a strainer to pour the tea into cups, filtering out the tea leaves and spices.

    • Enjoy: Serve hot and enjoy the comforting and aromatic Gud Masala Chai.

This recipe serves approximately 2-3 cups of Gud Masala Chai. Adjust the ingredients proportionally if you need to make more.
